King Gyros of Terre Haute

The most important aspect of any restaurant is its food, and in that aspect King Gyro’s performs phenomenally. The first thing you’ll notice while looking at the menu is the great amount of selection and diversity, ranging from burgers to fish to Italian beef  to BBQ chicken to poor boy to chicken nuggets to tenderloins to sausage to gyros, and the list goes on. If you’re a human being with a stomach, there is something on this menu for you.

Aside from having great selection, King Gyro’s food is absolutely delicious. I’ve been numerous times in the past couple of weeks, sampling something different each time I go, and everything I’ve tasted is just plain awesome. Easily the most delectable menu item is their gyro, which is such a fantastically amazing sandwich that I’m having trouble putting into words how phenomenally delicious it is. Inside of a gyro, you’ll find a very generous portion of their fantastic gyro meat, which is tender and flavorful, topped with fresh tomatoes, onions, and a cool sour cream cucumber sauce, and it’s all wrapped in a delicious piece of pita bread. Everything about it is just to die for. I went there with my girlfriend Kim, who is a vegetarian, and they even went out of their way to make her a vegetarian-style gyro that she says was delicious.

On subsequent visits, I’ve sampled their Chicago-style Italian sausage, which came loaded with all the amenities one would expect from a food stand in Chicago and tasted absolutely fantastic, especially since I ordered my bread “dipped” under recommendation of the woman behind the counter. I’ve tasted their barbecue chicken, which is tender and moist, full of flavor and smothered in a delicious barbecue sauce.

The last menu item I’ve had the pleasure of ingesting was the Italian beef sandwich. I feel I must inform you that I’ve only had one bite of this sandwich, as my good friend Zack Deal was the one who ordered it, but I can tell you from that one bite that it is a very good Italian beef. Is it the best I’ve ever had? Not by any means. My grandma’s homemade Italian beef is easily the best on Earth, but she doesn’t make it near as often as I’d like, so I feel King Gyro’s sandwich would definitely be adequate when you’ve got a hunger that cries for Italian beef and will settle for nothing else.

One last thing I’d like to point out is how awesome their fries are. I’m not sure what it is about them that makes them so good, because they’re really pretty standard fare. Still, something about them elevates King Gyro’s fries way above your average fry. Just make sure you order a combo when you go in.

Lastly, King Gyro’s staff consists of very enjoyable, friendly people. Your order is always taken by someone with a smile and a positive attitude, and it makes your visit to the restaurant very enjoyable. The only thing about the establishment that I could think of to complain about would be the one or two pesky little flies that are buzzing around, but that’s really about it.

Does it Hit the Spot?

Oh my God, yes! King Gyro’s is currently one of my favorite restaurants in Terre Haute, and that isn’t likely to change any time soon. The staff is friendly, the food is fantastic, and the prices are an absolute bargain. I almost feel like I’m ripping them off when they give me my food.

I’m not sure why it is, but I’ve never seen more than a handful of cars parked in the lot at a time. People of Terre Haute, Indiana, what is your deal? This place serves up some of the best gyros I’ve ever had! Do yourself a favor and make this your lunch stop within the next week or so (or if it is out of your way, they deliver!). Order a gyro combo, and if you can honestly tell me you don’t love it, we can have a nice talk about how you have awful taste.
