I recently took a trip up to Michigan City with my lovely girlfriend Kimberlee Boland, and the first thing we did when we got to our crummy, disgusting, poorly lit, stiff-bedded, crappy showered, slightly stinky but extremely-cheap-so-it’s-to-be-expected hotel was worry about lunch. Right down the street from our Inn was a place called Schoop’s, and a burger sounded really, really good.

Upon walking into the diner-style building, we were struck with a vintage atmosphere. Posters and pictures of Shirley Temple and Elvis Presley, among other old time celebrities and culture icons, were plastered along the walls, antique car memorabilia was all over the place, and plenty of bubbly teenage waitresses were on hand. The red color scheme and old time rock and roll completed the illusion, bringing everything together into a charming little package.

Shortly after seating ourselves right next to a giant poster of The King of Rock and Roll, our service began. We ordered our drinks and looked over the menu, which offered the variety you would expect from such a restaurant. Burgers, sandwiches, soups and salads were represented in full effect. I did notice something strange on the menu, called a Green Olive Burger. That must be a northern thing, because I noticed it at two other restaurants we visited during our short vacation, and I’ve never seen anything like that here in Terre Haute.

Kim ordered a veggie burger, I got the tried and true double cheeseburger, and we got an order of fries to split between the two of us. A short wait and discussion about whether or not Shirley Temple is dead (she’s not) later, our food arrived in red baskets lined with a sheet of paper, which complemented the aesthetic vibe of the diner well. Her veggie burger appeared to be hand made and grilled, which I suspect is a refreshing change from the frozen hockey pucks I usually see her eating. She liked it rather well.

Now onto the meat and potatoes, more specifically my burger and our fries. The first thing I noticed about my double was that it was much larger than I expected it to be, which was a welcomed surprise (though I did pay for it later with a belly cramp while scaling sandy dunes at a Lake Michigan beach). The thing was piping hot and fresh, weighed a good half pound or so, and was topped with plenty of delicious condiments and vegetables.

Everything inside of the bun was delicious. The condiments were in proper proportions, the veggies were fresh and tasty, the swiss cheese was delicious, and the meat was flavorful and greasy. Don’t let that greasy comment scare you off, as it wasn’t so greasy it was disgusting. Just nice and juicy, the way a good burger should be. The bun itself? Meh at best. It reminded me of a Steak and Shake burger, as it lacked any real flavor and didn’t do much for the burger other than hold everything together. The fries were of a generous portion that was easily enough for the both of us. They were really pretty average, but served as a nice side to my burger.

Our service was pretty good. I never ran out of Mountain Dew, our food was brought to us while it was still hot, and the waitress was usually smiling. We seemed to have gone during some down time, as there was only us and maybe five other parties present so I’m not sure how the Schoop’s team handles stress, but we were satisfied.

Does It Hit The Spot?

Oh yeah. Schoop’s is a great place to grab a burger, some fries, and soak in some vintage atmosphere. The food was good, the portions were generous, and the prices were fair. My burger was great, the bun wasn’t, and the fries were good enough. At the end of the meal I was full, satisfied, and recharged, ready to take on the day.

If you’re in the Michigan City area, visiting the Great Lake or whatever, I recommend hitting up Schoop’s for lunch and some charming atmosphere.
