[Fast Food Review] Taco Bell’s Cantina Tacos (Chicken, Steak, Carnitas)

Taco Bell doesn’t have authentic Mexican food. One look at menu items like the Tortada or the Enchirito should tell you that. People don’t eat Taco Bell because they want authentic Mexican cuisine, they eat it because it is dirt cheap and delicious.

Obviously someone in the executive office doesn’t realize that. Taco Bell recently released three “Cantina” tacos, chicken, steak, and carnitas, in an attempt to provide a more “authentic” Mexican style taco. Are these really authentic? I couldn’t tell you. Should I research it and find out to better serve you, the reader? Yes. Am I going to? No. But I will tell you whether or not these new tacos hit the spot.

Chicken:

We’ll start off with the one I was least excited to try, not because I dislike chicken or anything, but because Taco Bell’s chicken doesn’t really taste good on anything other than a quesadilla. Upon unwrapping the aluminum foil I find the lime, which actually looks pretty fresh, a truth that surprised me greatly. The chicken has a great aroma, I take a bit of a rogue piece and it’s pretty flavorful as well. After adding some lime juice and a packet of Fire sauce I take my first bite only to be met with complete disappointment.

What the hell is this?

It is extremely flavorless. Bland, and painfully so. You can’t taste the chicken, the lime, the cilantro, the onions or even the fire sauce through this forcefield of corn tortilla that comes double wrapped around the fillings. Man. It’s also very dry, I’m very disappointed. What really gets to me is that I wasted $1.59 on this thing thinking it would be good.

Steak:

The same thing goes here. It smells good, the steak tastes good, the lime tastes great, the fire sauce is plentiful, but you can’t taste a damn thing other than the gross corn tortilla shell that encapsulates what would otherwise be a pretty tasty menu item. I decided to pick off pieces of steak and eat them instead of eating it as a taco, and I noticed the onions and cilantro are just as flavorless as the corn shell.

Carnitas:

This last one was what I was most looking forward to, simply because it’s a new ingredient from Taco Bell. Shredded pork isn’t something I’ve ever had from the chain before, but I don’t know if they ever served it in the past. I eat a small piece of the seasoned pork and it tastes great. I add the fire sauce and lime only to realize there is a rotten spot on the back. Gross. The first bite, like the others, yields little to no flavor. This is ridiculous. It is literally the most flavorless fast food item I’ve ever eaten, and that’s saying something.

Does It Hit The Spot?

Absolutely not.

I can’t believe Taco Bell managed to screw something up as badly as they did here. These “Cantina” tacos are literally like eating cardboard with lime and hot sauce. The cilantro and onions have no taste, and even though the meat fillers all taste good on their own merit, once wrapped in this corn tortilla they become as undetectable as the other ingredients. Whoever tested these and thought they were good enough to be released to the public was an idiot and needs slapped.

At least I was full after eating all three, but $1.59 each? What? That’s fucking retarded.

I’ve read several reviews of this and they all pretty much come to the same conclusion. I’ve had Del Taco’s version and didn’t like them, but I guess I shouldn’t be comparing fast food to authentic Mexican food. Maybe they should stick to pseudo tex-mex like Chalupas (which I actually enjoy) etc… Maybe if they had deep fried them they would have been palatable, then again, deep fried cardboard might not be too appealing. I’m no fan of uncooked corn tacos myself unless they are prepared properly. Usually if the clientele is all Mexican, you know the food is going to be good.
I’m glad I didn’t buy these taco bell monstrosities!

I absolutely agree. Did they not send these through a round of taste tests before adding them to the menu? I don’t see how these would have made it past the first round.

Good Lord, what is wrong with you guys? No where in Taco Bell’s ads have they EVER said they are a Mexican restaurant. Authentic Mexican food? Got news for you guys, authentic Mexican food comes with a dose of the runs. I get so tired of hearing people bash Taco Bell. Please just go somewhere else, and leave Taco Bell to the folks who love it, which is a lot of folks.
Geez, why would anyone take to time to review a taco…. anywhere! Empty wagons rattle the loudest.
