[Fast Food Review] Taco Bell’s XXL Chalupa

Purchased at: Taco Bell
Cost: $2.79

Taco Bell has done it many times before. If the powers that be can’t think of an entirely new product that uses the same handful of readily available ingredients and give a ridiculous made up name, like Tortada, then they’ll settle for the next best thing: take an old favorite, and make it bigger.

But how do they do it? How do they take something small, and make it big? Well, for any fan of great American Cinema, the answer is quite simple. In the critically acclaimed 1997 classic film Good Burger, the demented manager of Mondo Burger uses an illegal chemical known as Triampathol to super size his meat patties. Now, the director chose never to reveal exactly why Triampathol was made illegal, and I’m not even sure I want to know.

The point is, Taco Bell is obviously doing something to our food to make it bigger. All we need now is a few local psued0-Mex restaurant employees dedicated enough to breach the chain’s security and discover their secret and embark on a ridiculously epic quest to put their hole-in-the-wall back on top.

Review:

When I pulled my XXL Chalupa out of the bag, along with my Volcano Taco, I was thoroughly impressed with the size of the packaging. The Chalupa comes in a box slightly shorter and less thick than my bicep, cleverly boasting the phrase “Big things come in big packages.” I was super psyched to eat this thing, if for no other reason than how big it was. With a watering mouth and excited tummy I flipped open the lid on the box and–

Wait… what the hell is this?

The XXL Chalupa’s box is literally two times bigger than it needs to be. The entire Chalupa fits perfectly in the bottom part of the box, the lid just being wasted cardboard. This is really quite ridiculous.

Thankfully the Chalupa itself is still quite large, but I’m really disappointed that Taco Bell would try to deceive its customers into thinking they’re getting something totally huge. Even worse, they honestly thought no one would notice they’d been had once they opened the box. It’s the equivalent of hearing a guy talk about his penis. Chances are, if a guy brags about his 10-inch dick, his dick probably stopped growing when he was 10.

Regardless, the XXL Chalupa is pretty good, and it’s certainly much bigger than a regular Chalupa. It’s got all of the regular fixin’s, including the delightfully chewy shell, seasoned beef, sour cream, salsa fresca and a few other ingredients, only multiplied by two. If you’re a fan of the original Chalupa, you’ll enjoy the XXL.

Does it Hit the Spot?

Yes, it does. And how could it not? It’s one of Taco Bell’s best menu items in giganto form. It’s got everything you love about the Chalupa, only more of it. I’m still pretty upset that Taco Bell tried to trick me into thinking it was bigger than it is by using a bigger box than they needed to, but as I sit here with a full stomach I find it hard to complain too much.

At $2.79 it isn’t a bad deal, considering there are items half the size for the same amount of cash on the TB menu, so I’d say it’s worth a try, especially if you know you like Chalupas.
