What is it exactly? Well, it’s an absolutely delicious pastry cream sandwiched between two light yellow cake halves with a chocolate icing spilled over it. The Boston cream pie was originally conceived at the Boston Parker House Hotel in Boston by French chef, M. Sanzian.

Review:

The packaging proudly states “Vermont’s finest” and has a picture of the dessert, a speech bubble to the home team, and the Paul Revere Statue. Each serving is one half cup, which is the standard serving size for ice cream. It contains 250 calories, 13 grams of fat, 8 grams of saturated fat, 90 milligrams of cholesterol, 29 grams of carbohydrates, and 26 grams of sugar. Which is just a bit more than one slice of the actual dessert. But you don’t care about that. Even if you did, your figure has nothing to do with why you’re eating this ice cream, does it?

When I popped open the top I could smell the overall air of sweetness. A subtle chocolate aroma wafted over my nose with a touch of vanilla on the back end.

There are three major components to a Boston cream pie: the pastry cream, chocolate icing, and the cake. The pastry cream in the ice cream has a rich creamy texture with a hint of vanilla and a touch of sweetness. The chocolate icing was replaced by chocolate fudge chips. It is a little unusual since Ben & Jerry’s has used chocolate icing or swirls before in their product. The cake part of the dessert was very delicious. Big cubes of yellow cake held up well within the ice cream and gave the the dessert some more texture. The ice cream itself tasted like frozen custard and also adds to the whole experience.

Does it Hit the Spot?

Hell yeah! This is by far my favorite flavor the Ben & Jerry’s company has produced to date. Everything is almost exactly like the dessert I’ve had at the Parker House. The creamy custard ice cream is the only added ingredient, and it is a treat! I do wish that they used an icing or swirls to be more accurate to its namesake but we can’t always have everything we want. Go out and buy this ice cream, it’s limited edition and who knows if they are going to keep it in their product line for long.

Purchased at: Stop & Shop Cost: $3.00 (Sale Price) Size: 1 pint Review by: David Roshinski Nothing is more iconic of a dessert in Massachusetts than the Boston cream pie.
